[edit]From Middle High German gülte (“debt, financial duty, fee, payment, price, interest”), from Old High German *gulta, from Proto-West Germanic *guldijā, derived from the verb at hand in gelten. Cognate with Middle Dutch gulde, Middle Low German gülde.
