Etymology
[edit]First attested as elsler in 1251. The oldest attestation suggests a compound derived from els (“alder, Alnus”) and laar (“intensively cultivated forest”). It is possible, however, that the oldest attestation is a scribal error, and that the toponym thus derives from a compound of els and Old Dutch *tere (“tree”). Compare Appeltern and the German hydronym Elster.
