[edit]From Latin Aegyptum, accusative of Aegyptus (“Egypt”), from Ancient Greek Αἴγυπτος (Aíguptos, “river Nile, Egypt”), from Egyptian ḥwt-kꜣ-ptḥ (“temple of the ka of Ptah”), the name of a temple to the god Ptah at Memphis, whose Late Egyptian pronunciation is reflected by Akkadian 𒄭𒆪𒌒𒋫𒀪 (ḫikuptaḫ).
