[edit]First attested as in dichtere in 1228. Etymology uncertain. Perhaps a compound formed from an unknown first component related to gedijen (“thrive, prosper”), dik (“thick, fat”) and dicht (“dense, closed”) and Old Dutch heri (“sandy ridge”).
