Etymology

First attested as derthesen in 1253. Compound of an unclear first element and the dative plural form of Middle Dutch hees (“brushwood”). The first element may derive from Middle Dutch dare (“boggy soil”) or from a term cognate to Old High German tart (“javelin”) and Old English daroþ (“javelin”).
