Etymology

According to folk etymology, the name originates from a story that in the early days of the Vietnamese settlement, there was a very large crocodile washed up here, its teeth stuck on this land.

In Tự vị tiếng nói miền Nam by Vương Hồng Sển, the name is said to be derived from Khmer ចង្ក្រាន (cɑngkraan, “stove, furnace”) (whence also cà ràng). The Khmers in Xà Tôn (Tri Tôn) used to make and sell their own kind of furnaces. Over time, people started to pronounce kraan as Cái Răng.
