Etymology

First attested as bersselare in 1482. Derived from either a Germanic term cognate to or directly from Latin bersa (enclosed hunting grounds) and laar (intensively cultivated forest). Compare Bears, Beers, Beersdonk, Beerze, Middelbeers, Oostelbeers and Westelbeers.
