Etymology

First attested as beersdonc in 1340. Compound of a term either cognate to or directly derived from Latin bersa (enclosed hunting grounds) and donk (sandy hill protruding above a marsh). Compare Bears, Beers, Beerze, Besselaar, Middelbeers, Oostelbeers and Westelbeers.
