[edit]Unclear. Possibly from Italian pappa (“pap, mush”), from Latin pappa (“food for children”). Possibly related to Middle Low German pappe, English pap, Dutch pap, German Pappe (“pap, porridge; wheatpaste; cardboard”), Old French papa/pape, Bulgarian папам (papam, “to eat”) and Serbo-Croatian папати/papati (“to eat”), among others.
