Unclear. Possibly from Italian pappa (pap, mush), from Latin pappa (food for children). Possibly related to Middle Low German pappe, English pap, Dutch pap, German Pappe (pap, porridge; wheatpaste; cardboard), Old French papa/pape, Bulgarian папам (papam, to eat) and Serbo-Croatian папати/papati (to eat), among others.
