[edit]Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *dʰe, whence -θεν (-then). Doublet of -σε (-se). Conflated with or derived from those two. Displaced -θι (-thi) in medial/proximal/distal place demonstratives. (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
