[edit]Not attested as an individual character before the seal script. Shuowen considers it to be an ideogrammic compound (會意 / 会意) : 冖 + 一 (a cloth to cover something). Some consider it to be a variant of the nearly homophonous 冃 (a hat). See 冡.
