Etymology

From an unattested root *marš(a)-, from Proto-Anatolian *mr̥sa-, from Proto-Indo-European *mers-. Compare Sanskrit मृष् (mṛṣ, to forget), Lithuanian miršti (to forget, lose, become oblivious), Latvian aizmirst (to forget), Gothic 𐌼𐌰𐍂𐌶𐌾𐌰𐌽 (marzjan, to annoy, bother, disturb, offend), Tocharian A märs- (to forget), Old Armenian մոռանամ (moṙanam), English mar.
