Etymology

Usually compared to Common Slavic *lopata (โ€œshovelโ€) and Lithuanian lรณpeta (โ€œshovelโ€), but these are rather Balto-Slavic derivations of a stem found in Lithuanian lรฃpas (โ€œleafโ€) and Common Slavic *lopัŠ.
