Perhaps from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀲𑁆𑀣𑀓𑁆𑀓𑁆 (*sthakk). Cognate with Nepali थाक्नु (thāknu), Maithili थाकब (thākab) / 𑒟𑒰𑒏𑒥 (thākaba), Magahi 𑂟𑂰𑂍𑂪 (thākal), Gujarati થાકવું (thākvũ), Marathi थकणे (thakṇe), Bengali থাকা (thaka), Assamese থকা (thoka), থাকা (thaka).[1]
