Inherited from Proto-Turkic *teŋri (sky, god). Cognate with Old Turkic 𐱅𐰭𐰼𐰃 (teŋri), Karakhanid تَنْكْرٖى (teŋrī), Turkish tanrı, Yakut таҥара (tañara) and Chuvash турӑ (tură).
