From Proto-Turkic *teŋri (god, sky). Cognate with Old Turkic 𐱅𐰭𐰼𐰃 (teŋri, sky), Old Uyghur 𐾀𐽺𐽷𐽾𐽶 (tnkry) and Turkish tanrı (god).
