Inherited from Proto-Turkic *eb (house). Cognate with Orkhon Turkic 𐰋 (eb), Chuvash авлан (avlan, to marry), Tuvan өг (ög, yurt, tent) and Turkish ev (house).

The constellation sense is a semantic loan from Middle Chinese 宿.
