Inherited from Proto-Turkic *k(i)aya (rock). Cognate with Old Uyghur 𐽲𐾄𐽰𐽶𐽰, Turkish kaya, Uzbek qoya, Bashkir ҡая (qaya), Yakut хайа (qaya). Compare also Mongolian хад (xad), Proto-Samoyedic *koəjə (mountain).
