Etymology

From Proto-Germanic *wrēþuz (“herd”). Cognate to Old English wrǣþ (“band”) and Old Danish vrāth (“herd of swine”). The -i- in the Gothic descendant (which is attested only once, possibly indicating a spelling error) is unexpected; one would expect a Gothic form *𐍅𐍂𐌴𐌸𐌿𐍃 (*wrēþus) based on its cognates.
