Etymology

[edit]

From *๐…๐Œน๐Œฝ๐Œธ๐Œพ๐Œฐ๐Œฝ (*winรพjan, โ€œwinnowโ€, from Proto-Germanic *winรพijanฤ…, a variant of *windwลnฤ…) +‎ *๐ƒ๐Œบ๐Œฐ๐Œฟ๐‚๐‰ (*skaurล). The latter element is cognate with Old High German skora (โ€œshovel, hoeโ€), apparently deriving from a Proto-Germanic *skurวญ, related to *skeranฤ… (โ€œto cutโ€) (compare Dutch scheuren (โ€œto tearโ€)).
