Etymology

From Proto-Germanic *laubą. Cognate to Old English lēaf, Old High German loub and Old Norse lauf. The Germanic cognates are neuter, and Lehmann believes that this term in the sense of "foliage" is neuter as well and contrasts with the masculine "leaf", comparing the relationship between those two to that between Latin vallum and Latin vallus.
