Etymology

[edit]

From Early Modern Korean 열ᄆᆡ (yelmoy), 열매 (yelmay).

Displaced Middle Korean 여름〮 (yèlúm, fruit), a nominalization of 열〯다〮 (yěltá, to ripen), due to normal sound changes transforming 녀름〮 (nyèlúm, summer) into the homophone 여름 (yelum, summer).[1] From Old Korean 菓音 (*YELUm).
