Etymology 1

[edit]

From reconstructed Middle Korean *볻 (*pwot), with suffix (-i, noun suffix).[1] See Yukjin dialect 보대 (bodae, vulva), which was a dialect that did not undergo palatalization of /t/. Cognate with Jeju 보뎅이 (bodeng'i, vulva) and probably also Japanese (hoto, id.), historically from Old Japanese *potə. Compare also (bul, genitalia), surviving in fossilized form in words such as 불알 (bural, testicle).
