Etymology

[edit]

First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 도ᄅᆞᅘᅧ〮 (Yale: twòlòhhyé), the infinitive form of the compound verb 도ᄅᆞᅘᅧ〮다〮 (twòlòhhyétá) from 도ᄅᆞ (twòlò–, to turn, to change) + ᅘᅧ〮다〮 (hhyétá, to pull; emphatic auxiliary).

In the seventeenth century, the infinitive form and the verb began to diverge. The former evolved into the modern adverb 도리어, while the verb itself has become modern 돌이키다 (dorikida), whose own infinitive is now 돌이켜 (dorikyeo).
