Etymology 1

Calque of Russian Желторо́ссия (Želtoróssija). The original Russian term was first used in 1905 by a journalist, Ilya Levitov, during the Russo-Japanese War.

Used with reference to the support given to the Communist Party of China and the People's Republic of China from the Soviet Union, as well as Chinese communist ideology having been derived from Soviet communist ideology.

The "yellow" refers to the tan skin colour of ethnic Chinese, mocking people referred with the term as pretending to be Russians. It may also allude to Желтороссия ("Yellow Russia"), a plan during Tsarist times to annex northern parts of China during the Qing dynasty.
