Etymology

[edit]

Compound of 韋駄天 (idaten, Skanda (Buddhism)) +‎ 走り (hashiri, running, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, continuative or stem form) of verb 走る hashiru, "to run"), from a story of Skanda running very fast to catch demons who had stolen holy relics.[1][2][3][4][5] The hashiri changes to bashiri as an instance of rendaku (連濁).

First cited to 1719.[1]
