Etymology

The 連用形 (ren'yōkei, stem or continuative form) of classical 下二段活用 (shimo nidan katsuyō) verb 雲隠る (kumogakuru, to hide or disappear behind the clouds).

Equivalent to (kumo, cloud) +‎ 隠れ (kakure, stem form of verb 隠れる (kakureru), “to disappear, hide”). The kakure changes to gakure as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
