Etymology

From Middle Chinese compound 隣國 / 邻国 (lin kwok, literally neighbor, next + country).

After the term was borrowed into Japanese, the  / (lín) character in the Chinese spelling was replaced by  / (lín), moving the radical to the other side. Compare modern Mandarin 鄰國邻国 (línguó).
