Etymology
[edit]From Old Japanese; first attested in a mokkan excavated from the Former Naniwa Palace, 652 - 686, as man'yōgana form 伊加比 <igapi₁>, apparently a half-calque of Middle Chinese 貽貝 (jɨ pɑiH) with 貝 (kai, “shell”). Some theories that describe the former part 貽 (i) as 異 (i, “different”) or 否 (ina, “no”) in a sense of "different or uncommon type of shells" seem folk etymology.
Noun
[edit]貽貝 or 貽貝 • (igai) ←いがひ (igafi)?
