[edit]From Old Japanese.
Derived from 見 (mi, the 未然形 (mizenkei, “incomplete or irrealis form”) of 上一段活用 (kami ichidan katsuyō, “upper monograde conjugation”) verb 見る (miru), “to look, see, watch”) + ゆ (-yu, passive, spontaneous, or potential verb suffix).[1][2]
