Etymology
[edit]Compound of 衝立 (tsuitate, “sticking and standing something up”, a shift from 突き立て (tsukitate), the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “continuative or stem form”) of verb 突き立てる (tsukitateru, “to stick something (as into a base) and stand it up”)[1]) + 障子 (shōji, “shoji, paper sliding panel”).[2][3][4][5]
First attested in 1106.[2]

Usage notes
[edit]Largely superseded in modern usage by the shortened term 衝立 (tsuitate).[2][4][5]
Historically, this referred to a single panel of 障子 (shōji) with a base. In modern usage, this might be multiple panels connected with hinges, as a folding screen.
The tsuitate shōji is different from the 屏風 (byōbu, another kind of folding screen) in that the tsuitate is made from panels of shōji (a screen covered in rice paper), while the byōbu is made of solid panels typically covered in lacquer, gold leaf, or a painted scene.
