Western Zhou | Shuowen Jiezi (compiled in Han) | Liushutong (compiled in Ming) |
Bronze inscriptions | Small seal script | Transcribed ancient scripts |
Original form of 邊. In oracle bone inscriptions, phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *men) : semantic 自 (“since; from”) + phonetic 丙 (OC *pqraŋʔ). It's possible that 自 was also a sound component as the original form of 鼻 (OC *blids). In bronze inscriptions 方 (OC *paŋ, *baŋ, “side; direction”) was added as a semantic or phonetic component.
In the modern form, 丙 has corrupted into 穴. In the seal script form, 方 corrupted into 𠔽.
