Etymology 1

/hi₁moro₂ki₁/: [pimorəki] → [pimoroki] → [ɸimoroki] → [çimoroki]. Etymology is unknown. The initial /hi₁/ is likely 霊 (hi₁, “spiritual power”). Suggestions for /moro₂/ include either 森 (mori, “forest”) or 守る (moru, “protect”). The final -ki₁ is not related to the phonetically distinct 木 (ki₂, “tree”).

Etymology 2

/hi₁boro₂ki₁/: [piborəki] → [piboroki] → [ɸiboroki] → [çiboroki]. From earlier himoroki. Medial bilabial -m- loses nasality and becomes a plosive -b-.
