Etymology
[edit]From compound of くま (kuma, “curved place, corner”) + 田 (ta, “field, paddy”), literally, “winding (rice) field”. The ta changes to da as an instance of rendaku (連濁). The kanji 熊 (kuma, “bear”) is an ateji (当て字) of くま.
