Etymology

Its exact origin in the Buddhist canon is unclear; possibly an adaptation of a vow of Kṣitigarbha 地藏菩薩地藏菩萨 (Dìzàng Púsà) recorded in the Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva Pūrvapraṇidhāna Sūtra.
