Etymology

From the Analects, Book 12 (《論語·顏淵》):

愛之欲其生惡之欲其死欲其欲其 [Classical Chinese, trad.]
爱之欲其生恶之欲其死欲其欲其 [Classical Chinese, simp.]
From: The Analects of Confucius, c. 475 – 221 BCE, translated based on James Legge's version
Ài zhī yù qí shēng, è zhī yù qí sǐ, jì yù qí shēng, yòu yù qí sǐ, shì huò yě. [Pinyin]
You love a man and wish him to live; you hate him and wish him to die. Having wished him to live, you also wish him to die. This is a case of delusion.
