Classical Japanese form of おそれる ( osoreru , “ to fear ” ) Prior to the Heian period 上( かみ ) 二( に ) 段( だん ) ( kami-nidan “ upper bigrade ” ) , 下( しも ) 二( に ) 段( だん ) ( shimo-nidan “ lower bigrade ” ) , and 四( よ ) 段( だん ) ( yodan “ quadrigrade ” ) conjugation patterns. The upper bigrade pattern is considered the oldest, but eventually only the lower bigrade pattern remained, which developed into modern 恐( おそ ) れる( osoreru ) .[ 1]
