     与(よ)力(りき)でも同(どう)心(しん)でもない御(ご)家(け)人(にん)の東(とう)馬(うま)と、岡(おか)っ引(ぴ)きの清(せい)五(ご)郎(ろう)は、五(ご)年(ねん)ほどまえに竪(たて)川(かわ)の向(む)こう側(がわ)の裏(うら)店(だな)で起(お)きた、若(わか)い指(さし)物(もの)師(し)の父(ちち)親(おや)殺(ころ)しの疑(うたが)いをきっかけに親(した)しくなった。

     Yoriki de mo dōshin de mo nai gokenin no Tōuma to, Okappiki no Seigorō wa, go-nen hodo mae ni Tatekawa no mukō gawa no uradana de okita, wakai sashimonoshi no chichioya koroshi no utagai o kikkake ni shitashikunatta.

     Tōuma, a samurai with neither power nor connections, became acquainted with Seigorō of Okappiki five years earlier across the Tate River on the case of a young carpenter suspected of killing his father in a back alley.
