Etymology
[edit]天照ら (irrealis of 天照る) + す (honorific auxiliary). Spelt with 万葉仮名 (Man'yōgana) as 安麻泥良須 (amaderasu), suggesting a voiced form, in the 4125th poem of the 万葉集 (Man'yōshū), even though 天照る was spelt without such voiced form as 安麻弖流 (amateru) in the 3650th poem.
Verb
[edit]天照らす or 天照らす • (amaterasu or amaderasu) †nidan
- (Classical Japanese, honorific, literal, Japanese mythology, of gods and heavenly bodies) Alternative form of 天照る (amateru, “to shine in heaven”)
