From 大 (ō-, “great”) + 三十日 (misoka, “thirtieth/last day of a (lunar) month”).[1][2][3] Compare Chinese 年三十 (niánsānshí, “Chinese New Year’s Eve”, literally “the [last] thirtieth of the year”). Note that the lunar month in the Chinese and Japanese traditions always has 29 or 30 days, unlike the months of the Gregorian calendar.
