From (ō-, great) +‎ 三十日 (misoka, thirtieth/last day of a (lunar) month).[1][2][3] Compare Chinese 年三十 (niánsānshí, Chinese New Year’s Eve, literally the [last] thirtieth of the year). Note that the lunar month in the Chinese and Japanese traditions always has 29 or 30 days, unlike the months of the Gregorian calendar.
