Etymology
[edit]明皇 is shortened from 至道大聖大明孝皇帝, the posthumous title of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang. The use of this appellation instead of 唐玄宗 is to observe the Chinese naming taboo custom and avoid the character 玄, found in the personal names of Zhao Xuanlang (趙玄朗), regarded as the ancestor of the Song royal family and granted the temple name 宋聖祖, and Kangxi Emperor of Qing, who was named 玄燁.
