Etymology

(sen, thousand) +‎ (shu, hand) +‎ 観音 (Kannon), calque of Sanskrit सहस्रभुजार्यावलोकितेश्वर (sahasrabhujāryāvalokiteśvara). The shu reading for changes to ju as an instance of rendaku (連濁). The on reading for changes to non as an instance of renjō (連声).
