[edit]中 (“mid-”) + 佐 (“to assist; assistant”), perhaps modeled after 中将 (chūjō, “senior deputy of the 近衛府 (Konoefu, “Bodyguard”); lieutenant general; vice admiral”). See 佐官 (sakan, “field officer”) for more.
