Etymology

The kanji spelling is an example of ateji (当て字), in this case used for both the sound values, and for the meanings:

• 一 (ichi, “one”, on'yomi)
• 熟 (jiku, “ripen”, irregular on'yomi)

The reading いちじく is thought to be an irregular rendering of the Middle Chinese 映日果 (ʔˠiæŋ^H ȵiɪt̚ kuɑ^X, “fig”), which is from Persian انجیر (anjir, “fig”) + Middle Chinese 果 (kuɑ^X, “fruit”).
