やさかにのまがたま (Yasakani no Magatama): an artist's depiction of the (unseen) Imperial Regalia of Japan, showing the Yasakani no Magatama as the jade jewel on the bottom.

Etymology

[edit]

Compound of 八尺瓊 (yasakani, long or large jewel, literally eight-foot jewel) +‎ (no, possessive particle) +‎ 勾玉 (magatama, curved jewel, type of ancient curved bead resembling a bear claw). The “eight-foot” may have originally referred to a long cord or necklace on which such magatama beads were strung, as magatama themselves were never so large.[1][2]
