[edit]/hehe/: *[pepe] → [fefe] → [hehe]. Until the 17th century, Japanese /h/ was realized as [ɸ], hence the below Nippo Jisho citation. Cognate with べべ (bebe).

Kazusa Shimōsa ni te soso to ifu kore to danjo no in mei kuniguni imyō ōshi Ryakusu Edo ni te mono no soso ketatsu nado ifu kotoba aru Izumi oyobi Tōtōmi hen ni te wa bobo ketatsu to iu. Edo ni te wa sahai harenu kotoba nari - Privates. He he “vulva”. In Ōu and Koeji, and sometimes in the Owari area said as be be. In Kansai and Kanto be be is used to mean “clothing of small children”. Called so so in Kazusa and Shimōsa. There are many similar terms for the private parts of men and women used throughout the country. Abbrev. In some Edo region dialects so so exists. Izumi and Tōtōmi dialects use bo bo. The word is not used in Edo.]
