Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from a Ryukyuan dialect that had the phonological shape *kuri, as †ふり (†furi) should have been expected, as in ふるちち (furuchichi, black) (< *kuro-susu). Compare Okinawan くり (kuri, cephalopod ink, Shuri dialect), Miyako ふり (furi, id., Irabu-Nakachi dialect), Yaeyama っふぇー (ffē, id., Ishigaki-Shika dialect). Outside of Ryukyuan, compare also Japanese (kuri, dark soil from the bed of the water), which is likely to be cognate.

Alternatively, Hōsei Daigaku Okinawa Bunka Kenkyūjo (1987) also records guri グリ of the same meaning, so it possible that the voicing may have prevented the affrication of this word before irregularly devoicing.
