[edit]From pre-Amami *isogari, from Proto-Ryukyuan *isogi, from Proto-Japonic *isonku.
Within the Amami Islands, cognate with Kikai 急がゆい (isugayui), Okinoerabu 急がゆん (ishugayun), Southern Amami Ōshima 急がゆむっ (ishogayum), and Tokunoshima 急がり (ishugari). Clearly cognate with Japanese 急ぐ (isogu).
In many Amami dialects, alveolar consonants undergo progressive palatalization after pR *i-.[1]
