あらまし

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Japanese

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Uncertain. Theories include derivation from (あら) (ara, rough, roughly) + まし (mashi, auxiliary verb), or from () (ari, stem or continuative form of ある) + (はし) (hashi, a bit; nearly). Some speculate derivation from 有り + まし, but Kokugo Daijiten calls this dubious (“疑問”).[1]
