Etymology

Uncertain. Theories include derivation from 粗(あら) (ara, “rough, roughly”) + まし (mashi, auxiliary verb), or from 有(あ)り (ari, stem or continuative form of ある) + 端(はし) (hashi, “a bit; nearly”). Some speculate derivation from 有り + まし, but Kokugo Daijiten calls this dubious (“疑問”).^[1]
